The Green is considered one of the best tailwater fisheries in North America. Even if you have been here before, you want to keep coming back. A huge bonus to fly fishing the plentiful trout is the amazing scenery all around. If you take a moment to stop and look around, you’ll find yourself surrounded by massive red rock cliffs, giant river otters, or an Osprey swooping down on the fish in the river.
Zones on the Green
The Green River is divided up into three sections:
- Section A is 7-mile long and begins directly below the Flaming Gorge Dam.
- Section B section begins at the end of section A section and continues for 9 miles.
- Section C section begins where section B section ends at the John Jarvie Ranch. It is about 14 miles long with many take-out points along the way.
Where are the fish?
Section A holds over 100,000 trout and you can see them too, thanks to the clear water! While there is comparatively fewer fish in the B section but they are usually bigger than those in the A section. This continues in the C section, which means fewer trout, but you have the possibility of catching a trophy-sized one.
If you are a wading fisherman, go for the A section. There is a 7-mile long trail that allows access to several “honey holes.” The B section has a 4-mile long trail with much less traffic and many deep pools and shallow shelves for some excellent fishing.
The A section is the most crowded but the fish are used to the crowds. The B section is less crowded and allows you some amazing fishing experiences. If you are looking for complete peace, the C section is the quietest and you can still catch a hog or a trout.
