The short answer is all year round!
Belize offers consistent fishing opportunities all year long. The climate is always perfect for fishing experiences. The average temperature stays at around 80 degrees. The rainy season brings passing showers which rarely affect your fishing day.
Belize flats are protected by the longest living barrier reef in the world or the Meso-American reef. It harbors bonefish, permit, tarpon, and snook – Belize’s 4 most popular sportfishing species.
Fly Fishing Opportunities
The best fishing in Belize continues from mid-February through the end of August.
January-February: The best tides are the new and full moon and you will have great opportunities if the ‘Northern’ or cold front doesn’t strike. By mid-February, you can expect some of the best permit catch rates.
March-April: With March begins the most favorable time for fly fishing. You can catch Bonefish daily. Permits are plenty and all-tide cycles make it advantageous for the angler. Tarpons migrate with baitfish and when found will eagerly eat a fly. More and larger tarpon arrive in April.
May-June: The hottest and driest months offer bonefish, permit, and tarpon with daily regularity. June is one of the best fishing months, despite the arrival of rains. However, most rain comes as quickly as passing rainstorms and won’t interrupt the fishing. You may even be able to catch permit, bonefish, and tarpon on the same day.
July-August: These are some of the best months for fishing in Belize. Don’t forget to get travel insurance because it is hurricane season and that could change your plans.
September- October: The migrating tarpon starts moving to other areas of the Caribbean. Permit fishing will remain good but try to catch them on the first and last quarter moons in September and October. Permit and Bonefish are available.
November- December: During November, the weather will calm down, presenting ideal conditions for Bonefish, and permit. The ideal weather phases when the fishing is excellent are the full and a new moon.
